Help and frequently asked questions

What are the signs of amblyopia or lazy eye?

Answer:

If a child shows any of the following signs, it's worth arranging them a full sight test with your optician if:

  • your child closes one eye to look at objects
  • your child tilts their head while looking at objects
  • your child cannot judge depth
  • your child bumps into objects - particularly on one side It's important to pay close attention to these symptoms as, generally, the earlier the problem is detected, the easier it is to put right.

Many opticians offer sight testing for pre-school children, and three years is often a good age to do this, while the visual system is still developing. Obvious problems, e.g. a clear squint or an inability to recognise toys and faces, should be checked out earlier.
