I've got high blood pressure. Will this affect my eyes?
When opticians talk about pressure within the eye (intra-ocular pressure) they mean pressure of the fluid that fills the eye, rather than the pressure of blood in the vessels which keeps the eye supplied with oxygen and nutrients.
High intra-ocular pressure is associated with the development of some eye conditions, such as glaucoma.
High blood pressure is not directly linked to high pressure of the fluid in the eye and therefore is not directly associated with eye conditions such as glaucoma, however poorly controlled high blood pressure can cause other problems related to damage to the delicate blood vessels at the back of the eye.
